How is MonitorIT installed into my virtual environment?

Very simple – there are built in wizards.

How does MonitorIT collect information from my virtual environments?

MonitorIT can leverage a few different mechanisms to collect data. For virtual hosts, we have developed integration to VMware and Citrix, leveraging the APIs to VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer to agentlessly collect information on the Host, VM Inventory, and Storage. Additionally, you can also install our Intelligent Agents to collect application level data on the VM’s and perform fix actions for automated remediation.

Can I monitor multiple hypervisors from the same MonitorIT server?

Yes, MonitorIT can support hybrid environments and monitor your Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere, or Hyper-V infrastructure through a single MonitorIT server and interface.

Do you have to put an agent on the host to monitor my VMware or Citrix environment?

No. Actually, MonitorIT leverages the APIs to the VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer hypervisors to agentlessly collect data on the Host, VM Inventory, and Storage.

Do I have to put an agent on every VM?

No. Our hypervisor integration provides agentless metrics on the health and performance of each VM including CPU, Memory Characteristics, Disk, and Processes. However, we do encourage customers to deploy our Intelligent Agents to critical systems for visibility into the performance of applications to eliminate false positives and blind spots.

Do I have to use XenCenter or vCenter to view my statistics in a virtual environment?

No. While we have included this capability out-of-box, we also give you the ability to use our native MonitorIT Web Interface. Alternatively, you can also view data collected by MonitorIT within any Enterprise Management Frameworks/Portals by sending information via SNMP.

Will I still receive information on VM’s I do not have agents deployed on if I’m using the host based licensing?

Yes. Agentlessly, we can collect data from each VM including CPU Utilization, CPU Readiness, Memory characteristics including consumption, ballooned, and shared/swapped, Storage, and Network Throughput.

Once I deploy agents, do I have to restart those machines?

No. One of the features of the Intelligent Agent is the fact that once an agent is deployed to a VM, that VM does not require a reboot.

Product Functionality

What distributions of VDI do you monitor?

MonitorIT offers out-of-the-box support for Citrix XenApp, Citrix XenDesktop, and Kaviza. In an upcoming release, we will also offer support for VMware View.

Where does the product gather metrics and what data will I get?

How does the product compete with EdgeSight?

MonitorIT actually compliments EdgeSight by capturing metrics about end user experience and correlating that with data from the physical environment and virtual infrastructure that EdgeSight doesn’t capture. This prevents silos of visibility that make it difficult to identify and remediate performance issues.

Does the product monitor both XenApp and XenDesktop?

Yes

Do I need to deploy an agent to gather metrics on end user performance?

Yes, the intelligent agent is deployed in the VDI Session. The agent is very easy to deploy and has low resource utilization so it will not impact the performance of the VDI Session.

Applications

Product Functionality

What applications can you monitor out-of-the-box? Is there a list anywhere in the product?

MonitorIT can monitor all applications, including 3rd party and custom applications by monitoring Processes, Performance Counters, Syslog, Files, Application Availability, Event Log, Custom Scripts, and Windows Services.

For 3rd party apps, MonitorIT ships with pre-configured monitoring rules which allows you to quickly and easily begin monitoring within minutes. A sample list of applications includes Microsoft Exchange, MYSQL, IIS, Sharepoint, Symantec Backup Exec, Active Directory, and more. A complete list can be found in the product, or by clicking Monitoring Rules Exchange.

In addition, you can create custom monitoring rules to monitor custom or homegrown applications. Some of the key components we can monitor against to ensure application availability include processes, Windows Services, Event Logs, Performance Counters, and more.

Do I have to use the MonitorIT pre-configured rules?

No. MonitorIT’s pre-configured monitoring rules are there for ease of use and flexibility. However, you can choose to create your own monitoring rules by leveraging the built-in configuration wizards.

What kind of information can I expect to get when monitoring applications?

With MonitorIT, you can set thresholds and deploy monitoring rules to receive alerts on the health, status, and availability of applications.

Can I set alerts?

Yes. Alerts can be sent via email, text message, SNMP trap, or Syslog message. You can specify thresholds and monitoring rules which initiate the alerting process within MonitorIT. Once an event takes place or a threshold is met, an alert is triggered.

How difficult is it to build custom monitoring rules?

Not difficult at all. In fact, we have an easy to use wizard that will take you through the steps to set up your own monitoring rules.

How do you monitor applications?

We monitor applications by deploying a series of monitoring rules to watch for specific services, processes, events, performance counters, etc. Once an event takes place or a threshold is met, an alert is sent notifying us that the application is running into issues or we’ve reached a certain threshold.

What about custom or home grown applications? Can we monitor them?

Yes. Any application consisting of processes or services can be monitored. If we do not already have pre-configured monitoring rules for a specific application, you can simply follow the step by step wizard built into the product to create custom monitoring rules. This will also enable you to set thresholds and alert based on those thresholds.

Network

Product Functionality

What network devices can you monitor?

MonitorIT has the capabilities, out-of-the-box, to monitor via Syslog and SNMP including traps, polling, and querying. This includes routers, switches, access points, firewalls, load balancers, and any other SNMP or Syslog enabled device within your environment.

What information can I receive by monitoring network devices such as switches or routers?

We can monitor for availability, bandwidth, latency, and packets per second on any of your SNMP enabled network devices.

What can you monitor via SNMP?

MonitorIT leverages SNMP Trap and SNMP Query Monitoring to collect information from any device that is SNMP enabled to analyze, troubleshoot, report, and provide baseline and trending data. Additionally, MonitorIT includes a MIB parsing feature to extract and make available the SNMP Trap OIDs from your server and device MIBs, to easily define the monitoring rules for SNMP Trap.

What can you monitor via Syslog?

MonitorIT allows you to collect Syslog messages transmitted from your selected servers and network infrastructure devices such as firewalls and routers. The MonitorIT Server listens on the standard Syslog UDP port for these messages and processes them according to your specified Syslog Alerts. You can be alerted when selected Syslog  messages are received, and you can use SYSLOGWatch to centralize your Syslog collection, management and reporting.

How do you monitor remote locations?

The Intelligent Agent can be designated a “Master Agent” which allows it to capture SNMP Traps and Syslog messages from any such enabled device in your environment. If an SNMP Trap or Syslog alerting condition is triggered, the “Master Agent” will then send alerts to the Monitor IT server. This is incredibly helpful as it provides a facility for deploying agents at a remote site, behind a firewall to monitor network devices, while negating the requirement to deploy an additional monitoring server to each location.

What databases can you monitor out-of-the-box? Is there a list anywhere in the product?

MonitorIT can monitor all databases, including 3rd party and custom databases.

For 3rd party databases, MonitorIT ships with pre-configured monitoring rules which allow you to quickly and easily begin monitoring within minutes. A sample list of databases includes MYSQL, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle.

In addition, you can create custom monitoring rules to monitor custom or homegrown databases. Some of the key components we can monitor against to ensure database availability include processes, Windows Services, Event Logs, Performance Counters, and more.

What kind of information can I expect to get when monitoring databases?

What Storage devices/Vendors can you monitor?

MonitorIT can monitor physical or virtual storage agentlessly. With virtual storage, we leverage our APIs to VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer while leveraging SNMP and Syslog to monitor physical storage. Within the product, we support vendors such as Dell, EMC, NetApp, IBM, and HP out-of-the-box.

What is the difference between how you monitor physical vs. virtual storage?

With virtual storage, we leverage our APIs to VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer while leveraging SNMP and Syslog to monitor physical storage

What information can I receive by monitoring Storage devices using MonitorIT?

For virtual storage, we can receive information such as Utilization, Snapshots; VM Growth, and Provisioned, Consumed, and Free Space.
For physical storage, we can monitor via SNMP or Syslog for information on bandwidth, latency, and packets per second.

What can you monitor via SNMP?

MonitorIT leverages SNMP Trap and SNMP Query Monitoring to collect information from any device that is SNMP enabled to analyze, troubleshoot, report, and provide baseline and trending data. Product Functionality

What datacenter components can you monitor?

Temperature monitors, air conditioners, surge suppressors, power distribution units, uninterruptable power supplies, generators, and any SNMP or Syslog enabled device.

What information can I receive by monitoring datacenter components such as temperature gauges or battery backups?

MonitorIT allows you to deploy monitoring rules and set thresholds on specific events within the datacenter. If those events take place or thresholds are met, you can receive alerts via email, text message, SNMP, or Syslog.

What can you monitor via SNMP?

MonitorIT leverages SNMP Trap and SNMP Query Monitoring to collect information from any device that is SNMP enabled to analyze, troubleshoot, report, and provide baseline and trending data. Additionally, MonitorIT includes a MIB parsing feature to extract and make available the SNMP Trap OIDs from your server and device MIBs, to easily define the monitoring rules for SNMP Trap.

What can you monitor via Syslog?

MonitorIT allows you to collect Syslog  messages transmitted from your selected servers and network infrastructure devices such as firewalls and routers. The MonitorIT Server listens on the standard Syslog UDP port for these messages and processes them according to your specified Syslog Alerts. You can be alerted when selected Syslog  messages are received, and you can use SYSLOGWatch to centralize your Syslog collection, management and reporting.
