The “Intelligent Agent” has several unique features that make it worthy of being considered intelligent.

  1. Easy to deploy and configure relative to most agents.
  2. It is able to capture deep diagnostic metrics with little resource utilization, typically only 0.1% CPU / <16MB of Memory / 1MB Footprint.
  3. The “master agent” capability negates the need to distribute servers at remote locations. Any agent can be designated a “master agent” at a remote site, behind a firewall to monitor any SNMP or Syslog enabled device and VMware or Citrix Virtual Machines, while negating the requirement to deploy an additional monitoring server to each location.

The “master agent” feature is a subset of the overall Intelligent Agent functionality. This capability is incredibly powerful because it allows the product to monitor and manage remote locations quickly and easily. Any agent can be designated as a “master agent” at a remote site, behind a firewall, and configured to proactively reach out to the central MonitorIT server if a condition is met and triggers an alert. There is no need to deploy a separate server at a remote location to monitor any Syslog, SNMP enabled device, and VMware or Citrix virtual hosts and virtual machines. The “master agent” still retains the capability to initiate automatic fix actions as with any other agent.

Remote Site Monitoring

Many distributed enterprises and service providers face challenges in monitoring the virtual environment outside of their core infrastructure. In order to monitor their Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual hosts remotely, administrators often deploy secondary instances of their monitoring solutions, which complicates management or increases cost because proxies or secondary servers are required. With “Master Agent functionality,” the IT professional can designate any agent at a remote site a master agent and it will monitor remote hypervisors and surrounding infrastructure, sending exception based alerts through the firewall when predetermined thresholds are breached.

The MonitorIT UI integrates with VMware vCenter via a tab plug-in so that the vCenter console can be leveraged for seamless operation. This gives an administrator the ability to manage not just VMware ESX/ESXi but also the physical infrastructure including networks, physical servers, applications, desktops and storage all from the vCenter console.

Product Functionality

How is MonitorIT installed into my virtual environment?

Very simple – there are built in wizards.

How does MonitorIT collect information from my virtual environments?

MonitorIT can leverage a few different mechanisms to collect data. For virtual hosts, we have developed integration to VMware and Citrix, leveraging the APIs to VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer to agentlessly collect information on the Host, VM Inventory, and Storage. Additionally, you can also install our Intelligent Agents to collect application level data on the VM’s and perform fix actions for automated remediation.

Can I monitor multiple hypervisors from the same MonitorIT server?

Yes, MonitorIT can support hybrid environments and monitor your Citrix XenServer, VMware vSphere, or Hyper-V infrastructure through a single MonitorIT server and interface.

Do you have to put an agent on the host to monitor my VMware or Citrix environment?

No. Actually, MonitorIT leverages the APIs to the VMware vSphere and Citrix XenServer hypervisors to agentlessly collect data on the Host, VM Inventory, and Storage.

Do I have to put an agent on every VM?

No. Our hypervisor integration provides agentless metrics on the health and performance of each VM including CPU, Memory Characteristics, Disk, and Processes. However, we do encourage customers to deploy our Intelligent Agents to critical systems for visibility into the performance of applications to eliminate false positives and blind spots.

Do I have to use XenCenter or vCenter to view my statistics in a virtual environment?

No. While we have included this capability out-of-box, we also give you the ability to use our native MonitorIT Web Interface. Alternatively, you can also view data collected by MonitorIT within any Enterprise Management Frameworks/Portals by sending information via SNMP.

Will I still receive information on VM’s I do not have agents deployed on if I’m using the host based licensing?

Yes. Agentlessly, we can collect data from each VM including CPU Utilization, CPU Readiness, Memory characteristics including consumption, ballooned, and shared/swapped, Storage, and Network Throughput.

Once I deploy agents, do I have to restart those machines?

No. One of the features of the Intelligent Agent is the fact that once an agent is deployed to a VM, that VM does not require a reboot.
