As a service provider we have SLA’s with our customers that require us to manage and monitor the performance of their infrastructure, applications and databases with great efficiency. To deliver on our commitments we have to rely on tools to support our processes. We used a legacy product from a Global IT software management company for a number of years and it proved to be less than adequate for our needs in terms of both product functionality and related support, the issues surrounding this technology became critical enough in our commercial business that we decided to move away from this product several months prior to the end of our contract. We used Goliath’s product in a small virtual server environment but decided to expand their footprint and replace the legacy product for the entire IT infrastructure because of the ease of use, functionality that covers both physical and virtual environments as well as the newly enhanced remote site management capability. Finally, we have found their support to be competent and responsive which is critical to our success.

We used N-able for several years but as our business grew and our market evolved so did our needs for high-technology tools that support our clients’ ever changing, complex infrastructures. Their Intelligent Agent, for instance, will save hours of setup time because of automated deployment. It also provides extensive data collection and reporting, remediation, and log management, all essential to meeting our SLA’s.

As an MSP, Remote Monitoring is key component not only to be able to charge as a monthly recurring service, but as additional benefit for a potential client that is considering to get on our Maintenance and Support Plans. In addition, we host a variety of other services which requires equipment to be “watched” so we also are our own client in this respect. Deploying agents on customer equipment is very simple and the remote agent has a very small footprint. Although they provide pre-configured watches for Blackberry and Exchange, there are special watches that I have created for specific types of equipment and they make it very easy to do in about 6 clicks. Unlike other products which force you to use SNMP, a remote agent gives us the ability to use it as a proxy to “watch” other internal equipment without having to configure SNMP or fuss with their firewall. We currently have our MonitorIT server screen on a 32″ LCD where our snake pit (where all our techs sit) can easily see the screen.
